Leaps in technology have not just pushed the boundaries of medicine and care – they have revolutionised how healthcare professionals work and collaborate.
At Systematic, we believe in impactful innovation. By designing smart and open software solutions, we help healthcare managers make the right decisions. And improve collaboration between professions and locations. And ultimately, ensure optimum care – across the patient journey.
Explore our approach to innovation and how we work with emerging technologies to help shape the future of modern healthcare.
We never just innovate for the sake of innovation. Instead, we apply a focused approach to maximise the potential of new technology across our solutions. The result is a powerful framework that brings together the best of best practice to create innovation with a real impact – across the continuum of care.
Developing exceptional software solutions requires an exceptional understanding of emerging technologies and future trends. Emerging technologies present great potential, but also risk. Healthcare is a field with no room for error, so our solutions bridge innovation with proven methods and international standards to deliver safe solutions and day one value.
Enabling a continuum of care requires us to maintain a keen focus on all aspects of the patient journey. To maximise our efforts, we constantly assess new technologies and prioritise our efforts to meet the needs of our customers.
Currently, we are concentrating our efforts on two main themes that have the potential to change healthcare for the better. The effects of this are already being seen across specific projects and several product improvements.
Co-creation in open ecosystems
Our continuum of care vision relies greatly on open ecosystems that allow private companies to innovate on top of the established healthcare system – for the benefit of citizens. With open systems based on technologies such as HL7 FHIR, we enable sector-wide collaboration and innovative co-creation, raising efficiency and bringing down costs for everyone involved.
The wide range of healthcare authorities and partners utilising the Columna ecosystem makes it easier to co-create and introduce new solutions with third-party vendors and developers, which ultimately increases the commercial potential of innovative projects.
Smarter workflows with AI and machine learning
Advancements in technology have made artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) crucial to modern healthcare. With smart and focused solutions, we help free up time for personnel by streamlining their workflows and providing data overviews to support smarter decision-making.
As the healthcare sector struggles with staffing issues, AI and ML solutions continue to provide smart solutions to complex challenges. Explore our AI and ML cases to see how we are helping to innovate and improve workflows in the healthcare sector.
By evaluating potential technology impact, scouting future trends and listening carefully to the needs of healthcare professionals, we deliver concrete value for customers across the healthcare spectrum.
Below, you can explore the technologies and design philosophies that underpin both our innovations and improvements.
Ecosystems
In a healthcare enterprise, the many different types of systems from multiple vendors add to the complexity of the system landscape. However, the maturity of integration standards, for example HL7 FHIR, and technologies such as microservices enable new ways of creating and governing healthcare enterprise architectures.
At Systematic, we embrace this new way of thinking and aspire to build an open ecosystem which is solidly based on reusable services that ensure data integrity and coherence. The ecosystem approach gives customers the freedom to grow their enterprise in a controlled environment. In connection with our advanced solutions within healthcare IT, ecosystems help support the continuum of care for patients, relatives and staff. With an open ecosystem, our goal is to enable partners to contribute with specialised and innovative applications that complement and add to the overall IT support of the clinical processes and workflows.
Smart technologies
Smart technologies connect the world around us. Data from different types of wearable or stationary sensors, cameras and other smart technologies are becoming increasingly important to prevent disease, detect early signs of illness and monitor patients in hospitals or in their own home. Even wearable consumer devices are becoming accurate to the point where an ECG monitor in a smart watch can help prevent serious illness.
At Systematic, our powerful Internet-of-Things (IoT) platform already harnesses the strengths of technologies such as Real Time Location Tracking (RTLS) of resources such as devices, beds and even people. Our specialists continue to explore a range of smart technology possibilities, including capturing and utilising data from smart sensors and wearables combined with more traditional medical device integration. Our goal is to build a state-of-the-art and a specialised IoT platform that will lever the power of AI to enable a clinical workforce multiplier with next-level decision-making support for caregivers.
AI and data science
With the growth of new technologies, we can automatically capture a variety of data from medical devices, medical and care records, workflow solutions etc. Automatic data capture can improve patient care pathways and prevent, diagnose or treat serious illness if handled correctly.
At Systematic, we develop our solutions with a data-first philosophy, utilising international standards with an open architecture. This allows us to apply state-of-the-art technologies such as Knowledge Graphs, Natural Language Processing technology and AI (machine learning) algorithms, providing easy-to-read context-based patient summaries and high-quality decision-making support or workload forecasts to optimise the care pathways.
Mobile technologies
Healthcare professionals need to be able to move around and take their IT solutions with them wherever they go. The maturity of computation power in mobile devices has opened up the possibility of users interacting in new ways with their IT when on the go.
At Systematic, we want to enable healthcare professionals to spend more time with patients and less on time-consuming administration. One of our core principles when designing new software is the philosophy of ‘mobile first’, i.e. to design solutions that offer the flexibility that healthcare professionals need. We want to harness the computation power of modern mobile devices and lever new technologies such as edge computing to ensure high-performing mobile applications. Building on knowledge from our Defence domain, we are continuously expanding our unique offline capabilities, making our solutions independent of network infrastructures to support our users in the best possible way – regardless of their location.
Cybersecurity
The increasing digitalisation of society means that more and more personal details and health information are recorded, stored and accessed across IT systems. Our health details are some of the most valuable and sensitive information we have – and they must be protected.
It is of paramount importance for Systematic that we can ensure that our software is resilient and secure. We employ leading code analysis technology to guarantee that our software is hardened against cyber threats. We design all our software with a security mindset based on core concepts from GDPR, for example privacy by design and privacy by default. Security is built into the code and our processes to ensure that our software can be trusted and relied on by healthcare professionals, patients, citizens and their relatives.
