Danish software to support NATO’s land operations

Systematic will deliver the defence alliance's new command-and-control system, SitaWare Headquarters, designed to protect and support deployed soldiers during critical missions. Additionally, the company is developing a comprehensive military healthcare system for deployed personnel.

What started in 1985 as a dream of supporting Danish Defence digitally has, over the years, come true, with 50+ countries now using the SitaWare command-and-control system to plan and conduct their military operations daily.

Danish IT software company Systematic is behind the IT solution, which during this period was also used during large joint NATO exercises worldwide. Today, SitaWare is used by 18 NATO member countries and by the Five Eyes (FVEY) alliance (USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand).

Supplying the digital foundation for NATO missions

For Systematic, the ultimate acknowledgement came earlier this year when NATO, after an extensive global tender, chose SitaWare as the digital foundation for its future land operations.

“In many ways, this is a culmination of our success within the defence field, where we have been developing, testing, and building SitaWare for 39 years in collaboration with users. The fact that our solution will be the digital foundation for the important tasks and missions performed by NATO and its coalition partners marks an important strategic step for us as well as being the ultimate acknowledgement,” said Systematic’s founder and board chairman Michael Holm after signing the agreement with NATO.

The contract with NATO runs for 12 years, of which two years are an implementation and training phase followed by a 10-year maintenance period.

No room for error in the digitalisation of the defence and health sectors

However, the Danish software success story does not end here, as NATO’s endorsement of SitaWare is leading to a growing interest in Systematic’s solutions, which are continually being developed and augmented. In addition, there is considerable focus on digitalisation as part of the current military rearmament taking place in several countries.

“The digitalisation of a country’s defence is both a complex and critical process, and solutions that have already proved their worth in operations are needed. In other words, countries want to be sure that the products are tried and tested, easy to use and that they are compatible with other systems. Moreover, they want a supplier who possesses in-depth knowledge of the defence domain. Systematic has documented success with digitalisation in several critical sectors – such as defence – but also in the health and utility sectors, and this undoubtedly contributes to increasing the confidence people have in us,” says Nikolaj Bramsen, CEO at Systematic.

Battlefield Health – new healthcare solution for soldiers

The SitaWare suite consists of several standard products developed in ongoing collaboration with users to meet their wishes for new functionality. One of the latest additions to the SitaWare suite is Battlefield Health. Here, Systematic has drawn on its experience from working with the military and the health domains to create a health system that uses NATO standards and supports the health of deployed military personnel.

SitaWare Battlefield Health is a complete military health system that links electronic health records and health IT with other military systems and personnel. During deployment to conflict zones in particular, it is vital that you have an overview and complete control of your data.

“Battlefield Health has been created to ensure fast medical assistance to deployed soldiers who are putting their lives on the line for others. When things are at their most critical, it is a question of ensuring the right treatment and fast and effective transport, and of being able to prepare to receive the soldier and share the latest relevant health details with the right bodies – and at the end of the day save lives. SitaWare Battlefield Health forms part of the digital safety net that is needed to bring soldiers safely home again to their families,” says Nikolaj Bramsen.
