Columna Patient Logistics - Wayfinding

Today’s hospitals are large and complex facilities with multiple departments, buildings, and entrances.

Many patients can therefore find them to be confusing places that are difficult to get around.

When patients struggle to find their way, it does not only affect the patient, but also has a major impact on the hospital’s efficiency and patient flow.

That’s why we’ve developed Columna Patient Logistics - an effective and integrated way-finding solution that works on mobile devices, web, and by way of digital signs in the hospital.

Using the system, patients can plan the best route to a ward in the comfort of their own home via their electronic admission letter. The patient can then be sure to arrive on time.

Thus, from the moment patients get out of their cars or off the bus they are supported in finding their way to the correct ward using the digital interactive signs at the hospital.

The all-in-one solution ensures that the digital signs are always up to date, so if a patient’s meeting point or ward is changed, this will be displayed immediately.

Patients may register their arrival using the hospital’s queuing and self-registration systems. They can then enter any additional information to help the staff save time.

The solution thereby helps hospitals servicing patients, which ultimately results in less delays and cancellations of treatments.

In this way, the system helps hospitals to provide good service and to reduce cancelled treatments.

The solution uses only existing technology such as Wi-Fi and 3G, which is already well-proven and well-established. Newer technologies such as Bluetooth can be added to optimize indoor navigation.

Columna Patient Logistics - Wayfinding

Columna Patient Logistics provides hospitals and patients with an easy wayfinding tool, that works both on computers and tablets. The tool help plans the easiest route to the correct ward on the hospital, so patients arrive on time and at the right location.

Many people experience hospitals as confusing places where it’s often hard to found your way around. The challenge of finding where you need to go is exacerbated by the fact that people are often a little nervous or excited when entering a hospital.

The challenges faced by patients and their families with finding their bearings in hospitals not only affect their treatment or their experience of the visit – it’s also expensive for the hospital. A study from a U.S. hospital with approx. 300 beds showed that an annual total of 4,500 staff hours were spent guiding patients and relatives who needed directions.

Web map

Columna Wayfinding includes a range of different modules designed to help people get their bearings – from planning how to get from their home to the hospital to getting practical directions while actually at the hospital.

Patients can access a web-based map from their computer at home, making it easy to find the best route to the hospital destination. The advantage of this kind of map is that hospitals can also embed them on their own website. This makes it easier for patients, because they don’t have to visit multiple websites to get directions. In addition, more and more hospitals are now using electronic appointment notification, in which it is possible to insert links providing directions.

All this gives patients greater peace of mind, with a sense of ease that stems from good preparation before the visit to the hospital. The hospital reaps a corresponding boost in efficiency, because the same map and location data are used in all the solutions.

The Systematic mobile phone app guides each patient or visitor to his/her particular destination. The application works as a personal GPS that provides a unique opportunity for indoor positioning. It is based solely on existing technologies that are already well established, such as WiFi and 3G.

Way finding

The only thing the visitor to the hospital has to do is to follow the route on the screen until s/he arrives at the intended destination.

The application works via computers and on all newer smartphones – it just requires configuring to the particular hospital, so that the right maps are shown.

On arrival at the hospital, most patients are rather nervous and feel a bit uncertain, and visitors may have already forgotten some of the information they received in advance. By using interactive information stands throughout the hospital, it is possible to give people directions to the exact place they want to go.

Such information stands also enable patients and visitors to scan their social security cards or other forms of ID, and then view their appointments and how to get to these. A picture of the destination can also be shown, making it easier to recognise on arrival. The hospital benefits from patients not only being able to get to the right place, but also that they register and wait in the right place.
