Giving back to the ward

Columna Flow has had two releases since June, and the second arrived six weeks ahead of schedule. Several of the changes in them started with a hospital asking us for it.

Task overviews open faster

A coordinator used to wait while the system pulled in every task and every location across the hospital. Now you choose which task types and task lists to see first, and the overview opens straight onto the work in front of you. 

Underneath every Columna Flow app sits a single location platform - one record of every room, bay and bed place, keeping each application in step.  

That platform now updates as things change rather than reloading in full, which is what keeps things quick at 8am on a site with thousands of locations. 

Only the tasks that still need doing 

Recurring tasks are how you handle predictable work: routine cleaning, trash collection, equipment retrieval. Not every one is needed every time - a room may not need doing, a piece of equipment may already be back - and those tasks used to sit in the overview until somebody removed them by hand. 

Columna Flow now keeps the list to what’s relevant.  

When the next task in a series comes due, the previous one steps aside, so nobody is working from a list with yesterday’s duplicate still on it. Every removal is logged, so nothing disappears without a record. 

Planned work stays visible 

A task booked three days ahead used to look identical to one created two minutes ago.  

Anything planned well in advance now carries a clock icon across all five task apps, and the person due to carry it out gets an audible prompt as the start time approaches.  

Work you always knew was coming stops being the work that slips. 

Developed with the hospitals using it 

The Columna Flow roadmap is shaped with the hospitals running it. What that looks like varies by customer - some work with us on longer-term themes, others feed back release by release - and several of the changes above are here because a customer asked for them.
