IRIS STANDARDS MANAGEMENT (ISM)

The IRIS Standards Management (ISM) course is broken down into a series of modules, each introducing a unique service provided by ISM.

 

Course Overview

Courses are tailored to individual needs, containing, at a minimum, an introduction to ISM and the core services for viewing, browsing, searching and configuration managing structured information elements. Additional services can be included, according to individual requirements. Each module provides class lectures and practical exercises for all parts of the system.

  • Administrative users controlling the use of ISM
  • Systems Implementers interesting in analysing force wide interoperability

Course Content

Core Services:

  • Introduction to ISM concepts
  • Viewing and Browsing structured information elements
  • Querying and Searching the ISM repository
  • Defining People, Roles, Organisations, Collections and Generic data elements
  • Administration of ISM, including:
    • backing up and restoring data
    • user and group management
    • user permissions
    • folder and data element management

Configuration Management, including:

  • Creation and management of configuration management (CM) models
  • Definition of Change Proposals
  • Data element management according to CM model
  • Automatic update of relationships between data elements
  • Reporting

MTF Structured Information Service

  • Defining and managing Message templates
  • Defining and managing character groups
  • Defining a Message and its structure
  • Defining Linear and Columnar Sets
  • Defining FFIRNs, FUDs and Data Items
  • Mission File (Change 3) and XML-MTF Schemas (Change 4) production, using EDGE
  • Generation of MTF and UF reports, using EDGE
  • Validation of MTF components, according to ADatP-3 C4
  • Import of XML-MTF Schemas

Symbology Structured Information Service

  • Defining a Symbol and its structure
  • Defining a Graphic and its structure
  • Defining image components
  • Using an external SVG editor to edit and translate SVG
  • Generation of the official Symbology standards documentation
  • Customisation of Symbology reports
  • Exporting Symbols and Graphics

XML Structured Information Service

  • Importing XML Schemas
  • Namespace Management
  • Defining an XML Schema and its structure
  • Using an XML editor to edit XML Schemas

Change Management

  • Defining Impact Statements
  • Defining Change Proposal Responses
  • Generation of an affected user report to analyse the affect a change will have on the end user community

Interoperability Analysis

  • Defining Sites
  • Defining Systems
  • Generating an Interoperability Analysis report to analyse interoperability between difference Sites and Systems, based on the version of data elements in use at selected Sites

Symbology Test Environment

  • Display Symbols and/or Graphics on representative backgrounds
  • Creating, saving and playing scenarios
  • Changing representative backgrounds
  • Change the display properties of Symbols and/or Graphics
  • Animating a Symbol and/or Graphic

Skills learned

Upon completion of the course, delegates will be able to:

Core Services

  • Understand the principles and concepts of ISM
  • Confidently define new People, Roles, Organisations, Collections and Generic data elements
  • Successfully be able to manage data elements stored within ISM
  • Administer the ISM database
  • View and search the ISM repository with confidence

MTF Structured Information Service

  • Confidently define new formatted Messages using the MTF Definer
  • Produce Mission File and XML Schemas for input into the IRIS Forms editor containing national and/or NATO MTFs
  • Generate official MTF and UF reports

Symbology Structured Information Service

  • Confidently define new Symbols and Graphics using the Symbology Definer
  • Generate official Symbology documentation
  • Export Symbols and Graphics in a variety of formats

XML Structured Information Service

  • Load XML Schemas into the ISM repository
  • Confidently define new XML Schemas
  • Use and XML Editor to edit XML Schemas

Change Management

  • Confidently define new Impact Statements and Change Proposal Responses
  • Generate an affected users report

Interoperability Analysis

  • Confidently define new Site and Systems
  • Generate an interoperability analysis report

Symbology Test Environment

  • Create scenarios of Symbols and/or Graphics on representative backgrounds

Course Prerequisites

  • IT literacy with basis keyboard skills
  • Delegates must have attended the ‘introduction to MTFs’ course, or be familiar with ADatP-3 to attend the module on the MTF SIS
  • Delegates must have attended the ‘introduction to XML’ course, or be familiar with XML Schemas to attend the module on the XML SIS
  • Delegates must be familiar with Symbology to attend the module on the Symbology SIS
