THE MIP SOLUTION APPLIED

This course is an exhaustive survey of the Military Interoperability Programme (MIP), which for more than a decade has released complete interoperability specifications for information exchange between land-focused Command and Control Information Systems.

The MIP specifications are publically available as a complete guidance that takes take into account that interoperability not only comprise data but also higher-level semantics (information) and its operational use. However, the broad appeal and comprehensiveness makes the MIP specifications rather complex to navigate in and to use.

Over the years, Systematic has held several leading positions in MIP and is actively contributing to the MIP specifications. On this background this exhaustive MIP survey is offered.

Course Overview

Duration

4 days

Audience

  • Governmental and commercial IT architects, software developers or systems integrators, responsible for specifying, assessing or applying the MIP solution.

  • Military J6, G6, S6 or equivalent Command and Information Sys-tem (CIS) staffs, responsible for testing or deploying a MIP com-pliant Command and Control Information System (C2IS).

Course Content

The course will be in form of a series of lessons, combined with exercises (no programming applied), QA sessions and discussions according to the preferences of the audience. Typically, the content is within the following topics:

  • Aspects of multinational interoperability.

  • MIP’s history and organisation and baselined releases.

  • The MIP specifications, an overview.

  • Data Modelling and IDEF1X Notation Basics.

  • MIP Joint Consultation, Command and Control Information Exchange Model (JC3IEDM), elements and usage.

  • Key differences between MIP C2IEDM and JC3IEDM.

  • Detailed examination of the constructs of the model including independent and dependent entities, legal values, business rules and information integrity.

  • Reference, Context and Operational Information Group.

  • MIP Data Exchange Mechanism (DEM), usage.

  • Alternate Development and Exchange Method (ADEM), introduction.

  • Mapping MIP with national C2IS, design considerations and performance.

  • Operational aspects and considerations when applying the MIP solution.

  • Principles of C2 implementing, integration and deploying when applying the MIP solution.

  • The future MIP solution, including MIP Information Model (MIM).

Skills Learned

Upon completion of the course, delegates will:

  • Have gained knowledge about MIP and its role in relation to multinational interoperability.

  • Be able to identify and distinguish between the concepts of the various MIP solutions.

  • Be able to navigate in and understand the MIP specifications.

  • Have gained knowledge about the future MIP solutions and specifications.

  • Will have gained knowledge of how to apply the MIP solutions in relation to national C2IS.

Course Prerequisites

  • IT literacy with basic keyboard skills.

  • Basic awareness of military organisation and operations.

  • Experience in software design and development is an advantage.
