The Danish municipalities and regional authorities have selected Systematic to supply the first country’s first nationwide telemedicine infrastructure.

Press release20 December 2018

Systematic is set to lead the first nationwide infrastructure for telemedicine in Denmark. The decision was made by the Fælles Udbud af Telemedicin (FUT – Joint Provision of Telemedicine) organisation, run by the Danish Agency for Digitisation (part of the Danish Ministry of Finance), providing Systematic with a green light for a project that is to create the framework for a completely new way of thinking about telemedicine and the healthcare sector.

“We are very pleased and proud to have been assigned this key task. We look forward to delivering a national solution that will strengthen cooperation between the Danish municipalities and regions, and which makes it possible to involve patients in their own treatment,” says Systematic Group Senior Vice President Henrik Jespersen.

Systematic will provide the nationwide infrastructure to support a wide range of specific telemedicine programmes. The IT solution thus becomes an advanced platform that serves as a foundation to bring all the data together, and ensures that the data is dealt with securely.

The new platform is set to be the key element for cohesive IT solutions and processes in the Danish healthcare system of the future. A telemedicine programme for relevant patients with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) will be the first setup the solution supports, and it will later be followed by other IT solutions for the other major groups of chronic diseases, such as diabetes, asthma and allergies.

“With telemedicine solutions, citizens get the opportunity to actively participate in their own treatment pathway. For example, you can take your blood pressure yourself and send the result to a doctor and hospital, so that the relevant experts as well as the patient can monitor the course of the disease appropriately. This is a solution for the whole of Denmark, and – as far as I know – it is one of the most ambitious solutions in the world. Systematic is therefore proud to help maintain and expand Denmark’s leading position within integrated healthcare,” explains Henrik Jespersen.

IT solutions for the healthcare sector are familiar territory for Systematic, which has provided the electronic health record system for Central Denmark Region (Region Midtjylland) and the Region of Southern Denmark (Region Syddanmark).

32 of the Danish municipalities have also chosen the Systematic Cura electronic citizen journal record system, and the company is also responsible for a large number of solutions designed to meet other similar requirements, including managing the logistics for hospitals in Denmark and abroad.

“Denmark has a strong tradition of placing the patient at the centre of efforts. By linking the many parties involved in this healthcare together even better, we can establish a coherent care pathway for the patient, where the quality of the treatment is increased by the different experts communicating with each other more effectively. This makes make life easier for each and every patient, as well as improving their treatment,” says Henrik Jespersen and concludes:

“We are looking forward to implementing yet one more exciting project in the healthcare sector, where we will be able to establish closer cooperation between municipalities, regions and the individual citizen.”

What is telemedicine?

Telemedicine is a general term that covers a wide range of healthcare approaches that are delivered digitally and remotely. With the help of telemedicine solutions, the individual citizen as well as staff in the healthcare system are able to monitor, diagnose, treat and advise patients about diseases and illnesses while people remain in their own homes. Patients can also monitor their own tests and measurements, and become better at dealing with life while suffering from a chronic illness.
