Modern naval warfare

Whether in peace or conflict, the maritime domain is vital for security and prosperity. Navies act as guardians, peacekeepers, diplomats, alliance partners, and humanitarian forces for good.

Yet the environment is complex – operations take place in the air, surface, and sub-surface with the emerging threat of peer and near-peer warfare ever more present. Commanders must be flexible, adaptable, and reactionary with the ability to rely solely on the ship, its systems, and its people when operating far from friendly shores.

SitaWare Maritime's off-the-shelf, innovative technology uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to sift, prosecute, and present data for a common operational picture that is easily shared among partners, providing that vital collaborative edge. As a modern maritime C4ISR system, SitaWare Maritime provides naval commanders with comprehensive command-and-control capabilities, seamless interoperability, and unique operational planning features.

Top 3 maritime domain challenges

  • Interoperability
  • Amphibiosity
  • Timing & accuracy

Interoperability

Exchanging information across a range of military or civilian authorities is essential in the maritime domain.

Amphibiousity

Amphibious warfare presents arguably the biggest C4ISR challenge for maritime commanders.

Timing & accuracy

Vast amounts of data coupled with short time spans present a challenge for the naval commander.

Interoperability

The maritime domain is a complex, operating environment that presents a multitude of challenges for naval commanders. Missions are hugely varied and often require input and coordination from a range of military and civilian partners.

And within the modern operating environment of peer and near-peer threats, multi-national alliances and task forces have never been more essential. The ability to communicate effectively therefore is crucial – systems must integrate across a variety of standards and sensors and information must be fast, seamless, and universally understood.

With SitaWare Maritime, naval commanders can exchange tracks, plans, and messages in a wide range of formats, both inside and outside the maritime domain. The solution communicates with virtually any other system and is designed to handle a wealth of interoperability standards. Forget the traditional stove-piped systems and welcome a new connected reality.

Amphibiosity

Operations in the littoral environment involve the projection of force from a warship before land manoeuvre, all enabled by logistic resupply. The resultant challenge is to synchronise a large number of units operating at range from their parent ships in a fast-moving environment.

These missions require a cohesive command structure, and success depends on effective planning and coordination. Collaborative planning across the task force is essential if commanders are to react quickly to changes in the area of operations and anticipate how the course of action will develop.

SitaWare Maritime ensures the effective tasking of all units across all platforms as well as the ability to visualise, communicate, and distribute details of an operation across military messaging, email, or chat. The solution also allows for operational planning to continuously adapt as the mission unfolds.

Timing & accuracy

Modern naval warfare is conducted within a multi-domain, information-rich environment – yet, for mission success, tasks and orders must be collated swiftly and accurately.

The varied and comprehensive nature of data available, combined with the possibility of spoofing and subterfuge, can make this a challenge. The correlation process is laborious and open to human error. Add to this the technical issues, timeliness, and manning requirements and it is easy to see where mistakes can be made, or the timeliness factor lost.

The application of correlation and fusion engines in SitaWare Maritime addresses this issue, automating processes and using AI in the development of the Recognised Maritime Picture (RMP). AI can bring a range of other capabilities to naval commanders, including developing algorithms to automatically identify ship classes and even individual vessels based on object recognition and providing an alert to a range of abnormal and other behaviours.
