Advancing subsurface capabilities in SitaWare Maritime

New releases bring major features for multidomain operations.

The July 2025 release of SitaWare Maritime marks a significant step forward in the support of subsurface operations. Building on previous capabilities, the update introduces key functionalities across three operational areas: Water Space Management (WSM), Prevention of Mutual Interference (PMI) and Naval Mine Warfare (NMW) planning and execution.

Enhanced water space management and prevention of mutual interference

The release enables comprehensive mapping and coordination of subsurface warfare activities. Operators can define and manage a wide range of WSM areas – from submarine patrol zones and no-attack areas to tactical communication-based regions – using predefined symbols now available in the system. PMI functionality complements this by allowing operators to plan and deconflict friendly submarine movements, submarine danger and interference areas, permanent and temporary submarine exercise areas and transit lanes, including 4D interference checks across time, space, and depth. The current release supports the full visualisation and management of these areas within the software, where the PMI functionality will come with a later release.

Naval mine warfare planning

The current release introduces foundational capabilities for Naval Mine Warfare (NMW) planning. Operators can define key planning elements such as MCM Channels (Q-routes), MCM Areas (Anchorage Areas), and Mine Threat Areas. These zones can be linked to specific bottom types and vessel capabilities using the expanded Equipment Library, which now includes fields for MCM equipment, seabed bottom types, and vessel profiles such as classic naval vessels, submarines, and mine countermeasure vessels (MCMVs). A new feature allows users to link a vessel represented in the ORBAT (Order of Battle) with a corresponding platform in the Equipment Library and to a track on the map, supporting consistency between planning layers and operational representation.

Operational readiness and progression

With this release, all primary WSM, PMI, and NMW planning symbols and visual layers are supported. The next release, scheduled for January 2026, will add the ability to import/export key APP-11 messages directly into the planning map and complete the full PMI functionality. Together, these developments significantly enhance the platform’s utility for planning and executing coordinated subsurface and mine warfare operations in coalition contexts.

Looking ahead

“The next development efforts will focus on the area of Amphibious warfare. Increasing multi-domain and interoperability functions, to work with landing troops, providing safe supply lines to a beach and keeping track of the entire force,” says Stig Meyer, Product Manager for SitaWare Maritime.
