Systematic first to be certified for new digital pregnancy care solution
Systematic's electronic medical record solution, Columna CIS, has become the first system certified by the Danish authority MedCom* to deliver data to a new digital, national solution for expectant mothers and their maternity care.
The digital solution, developed by the Danish Health Data Authority, will replace the current paper-based records – the maternity card (in Danish vandrejournalen) and the pregnancy journal (svangerskabsjournalen). The purpose is to make it easier to share data between doctors, birthing centres, and municipal health services, while giving expectant mothers better access to their own information.
The certification of Systematic's EMR system Columna CIS enables the three regions in Western Denmark using the solution to share expectant mothers' measurements and maternity records with other parties in the healthcare system. "This is exactly what the national solution aims to achieve: to ease the flow of information between healthcare professionals," says Inge Lise Korsholm, clinical expert on the project at Systematic and a qualified nurse.
The automation in the system is key, she continues: "We're constantly working to create the most seamless care journey possible for people in contact with the healthcare system. It's important to us that patients shouldn’t have to pass information between different healthcare professionals - the systems should handle this automatically."

First mover in the field
Systematic has worked closely with North Denmark Region, Central Denmark Region, and Region of Southern Denmark to define the components integrated into Columna CIS. This close partnership means the solution is tailored to the regions’ needs and meets the technical standards. Furthermore, the successful collaboration has made Systematic a first mover in the field, making Columna CIS the first EMR solution to achieve the necessary MedCom certification.
Digitalisation to enable easier information sharing
Today, expectant mothers receive a physical maternity card, on which healthcare personnel record and share information about the pregnant woman, fetus, and pregnancy. The card also gives the expectant mother insight into how her pregnancy is progressing.
GPs also complete a paper pregnancy journal, which is sent with the referral to the hospital. This helps assess pregnancy risks. The journal contains information about the expectant mother's previous illnesses and her current physical health, social circumstances, and work situation.
From 2026, these two paper journals will be replaced by a digital solution, which will make it easier to share information between involved parties and improve communication with expectant mothers. Columna CIS is now certified to integrate with this digital solution.
