Systematic bridges interoperability gap at CWIX 2020
The MIP 4.3 gateway demonstrator developed for SitaWare Headquarters proved how it can deliver seamless connectivity across a coalition

NATO has not let the COVID-19 pandemic stand in the way of its premier interoperability event – the Coalition Warrior Interoperability eXploration, eXperimentation, eXamination eXercise (CWIX) – with the 2020 iteration held virtually, and Systematic has risen to the challenge of working in a distributed manner, successfully demonstrating its Multilateral Interoperability Programme (MIP) 4.3 gateway.
CWIX 2020 has taken place at locations across NATO and partner countries, with the event connecting participants via a range of networks.
While a number of aspects of CWIX 2020 were scaled back – notably those that focused on vehicles and forward-deployed applications – most could be undertaken, including proving how Systematic’s MIP 4.3 gateway ensures that forces limited to working with MIP 3.1 systems can operate alongside those deploying with the latest specifications.
The MIP 4.3 gateway has been developed for SitaWare Headquarters as a company-led initiative. “The Systematic designed bridging capabilities of the MIP 4.3 gateway provides comfort for those countries using MIP 3.1. As long as at least one member of a coalition is operating with SitaWare Headquarters, a ‘bridge’ can be made to bring in 3.1 countries and ensure that information exchange can take place with the MIP 4.3 operators,” explains Peter Dan Hansen, Systematic’s domain manager for interoperability.

At CWIX 2020 the MIP 4.3 gateway successfully ‘bridged’ to multiple MIP 3.1 systems and countries, demonstrating the potential for a coalition to work seamlessly.
Hansen said that CWIX 2020 has been a successful event for Systematic in proving the efficacy of the MIP 4.3 gateway. He added that it was astonishing how well the exercise was executed, especially considering that it was the first time it has been held virtually and is usually such a large-scale event, with participants collocated at the NATO Joint Force Training Centre in Bydgoszcz, Poland.
“The virtual construct could be highly beneficial for future and similar events and allow de-risking to take place, enabling participants to hit the ground running when they arrive for the exercise proper,” Hansen said.
Due to the virtual exercise’s organisation and architecture, Systematic’s team were able to take part in CWIX 2020 from the company’s Aarhus headquarters.
