German Armoured Medical Carrier On Dusty Road

The German Army acquires Danish IT system for casualty management

The system, developed by Systematic, combines defence and healthcare technology to manage evacuation logistics, safeguard soldiers’ medical data and coordinate treatment when soldiers are wounded in combat.

Germany will be the first country to deploy Systematic’s newly developed solution, SitaWare Battlefield Health – a system designed to save lives by managing medical data and military operations in real time. The solution enables medical personnel to follow an injured soldier from the point of injury to final treatment, even in areas with limited network coverage.

The system brings together two of Systematic’s core areas of expertise – defence and healthcare technology – giving military forces a unified digital overview of casualties, their health data and the evacuation process.

“Systematic is among the few – if not the only – software companies in the world delivering proven, effective solutions to both the defence and healthcare sectors. This places us in a unique position to deliver what few others can, by combining our expertise from two complex domains into one integrated solution. It is a strong vote of confidence that Germany, with its large armed forces, has chosen to be the first country to adopt Battlefield Health,” says Nikolaj Bramsen, CEO of Systematic.

SitaWare Battlefield Health builds on the SitaWare platform – the world’s most widely used command-and-control system, already deployed by 19 NATO nations and the Five Eyes alliance (the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand). Battlefield Health can therefore be fully integrated with existing military command systems. Thus, Battlefield Health contributes to building the overall operational picture – a holistic overview of the situation on the battlefield.

“NATO member states are investing heavily in digitalisation and interoperability, and we see significant potential for SitaWare Battlefield Health. With our established position across the NATO alliance, we are well placed to deliver solutions that save lives and strengthen operational cohesion,” says Nikolaj Bramsen.

Digital data replaces paper notes

Today, German soldiers’ injuries are often recorded on a piece of paper by the first medic on the scene – and that paper follows the wounded soldier during transport. With SitaWare Battlefield Health, information is registered digitally, linked to the soldier’s medical record and follows him or her throughout the entire treatment pathway.

“We have worked intensively over the past year to develop SitaWare Battlefield Health because there is simply a global gap in systems that can both manage casualty evacuation and ensure that data follows the soldier from injury to recovery. With this solution, paperwork has been replaced by access to up-to-date medical information – even in areas with poor or no connectivity. This significantly increases the soldier’s chances of survival,” explains Mathis Dahlqvist, Director for Battlefield Health at Systematic.

Built for modern warfare

He explains that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has changed the way wars are fought and medical support is provided. The extensive use of drones means that wounded soldiers cannot always be evacuated immediately and must instead receive extended treatment in the field. This makes it critical to document all medical interventions and ensure they are passed on to prepare the next link in the evacuation chain. This is enabled by SitaWare Battlefield Health, which transmits real-time data on the soldier’s condition and treatment via military communication networks, such as encrypted radio channels. All of this helps improve the soldier’s chance of survival.
