Navy Lookout features Systematic’s PJ Wills on the future of naval command and control

The recent drone attacks on two commercial vessels off Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast, the Guinea-Bissau-flagged HS Dignity and the Ukrainian-owned, Maltese-flagged Chelsea 3, raise important questions about how naval forces identify and respond to emerging threats. Former Royal Navy officer and Systematic Senior Manager PJ Wills has published an opinion piece in Navy Lookout examining the challenge of turning threat detection into effective action.

The piece explores why command and control (C2), information sharing and NATO interoperability are essential as naval forces face increasingly complex maritime threats. PJ also examines how AI can help identify patterns and potential threats, while emphasising the importance of reliable data, human judgement and resilient systems.

“
“Detecting a threat may provide the warning. Turning that warning into a timely, co-ordinated response is what makes it count.”
PJ writes

He also highlights how Systematic’s recent contract with Denmark’s Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation will connect SitaWare with existing counter-drone systems, enabling a common operational picture and AI-supported analysis.
